2011 BRINGS SIGNIFICANT CHANGE FOR THE CLUB WITH HARD COURTS BEING REPLACED BY ARTIFICIAL COURTS IN TIME FOR THE SUMMER SEASON.

Saturday 17th December 2011 - CHRISTMAS PARTY IS BACK ON TRACK

Although the weather was pretty cold the snow, which had previously affected our last two Christmas parties, was thankfully absent so that our annual get together could proceed without problem. It was the usual mix of food and drink coupled with some fun quizzes and of course the inevitable carol singing. As in previous years, a few hardy individuals kept the celebrations going late into the night.

Saturday 19th November 2011 - PETE & CYNTHIA ASK THE QUESTIONS

It was another exciting night of trivia at Kent Elms Tennis Club as Pete Clark & Cynthia Collier provided us with another successful quiz night. The competition was close throughout most of the evening until the table consisting of Dawn & Keith Collins, Marilyn & Chris Sharples, Pat & John Rogers and George & Caroline Barton, moved into a decisive lead. The contestants also enjoyed a fish & chip supper, and the evening ended with what has become a tradition with Pete & Cynthia . . . each table received a prize!

Sunday 13th November 2011 - MOIRA SENDS A MESSAGE FROM OZ

Dear Tennis Team, greetings from sunny Sydney where we are high in the viewing tower and seeing this fantastic city from the air. Yesterday we met Vicki, Margaret's friend, and had lunch by the Sydney Harbour Bridge and managed to get tickets in the evening to see the ballet "The Merry Widow" . . . brilliant! We were put up in Singapore by Qantas and managed to get a flight to Brisbane where we were having a cocktail when it started thundering and lightning and the streets were like rivers! We both ordered another cocktail but luckily the weather was fine the next day and we picked up the campervan and it's been a pleasure to drive. We have been reduced to giggling schoolgirls in learning how to power up and so far I haven't poisoned Margaret with my campervan recipes. We went for a walk along a skywalk in the Dorrigo Mountains and had lunch in the rain forest and saw a Wallaby, a Kookaburra, and an old black tyre on the path which slithered away, and we realised it was a snake! Hope to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge tomorrow. Moira X X

Friday 23rd September 2011 - KENT ELMS GO WEST

For the third year running a group of club members consisting of Pat & Di Taylor, Phil & Hanna Stevens, Pat & John Rogers, Bren & Debby Lincoln, and Pete Clark together with Ted Bartlett, once again headed west for the Kent Elms 2011 sporting break. As usual, there was the endless round of golf, tennis, bowls, snooker, ten pin bowling, swimming, archery, and this year Hanna kept the Kent Elms flag flying by winning the pistol shooting. A big thanks to everyone who made the trip, and also to our guests, Ray & Lindsey Grimwood, who joined us on Thursday.

Sunday 18th September 2011 - MARTIN & SUE MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW

At the Leigh & Westcliff LTA Summer Tournament Finals, played at Westcliff Lawn TC, Martin Needs (Kent Elms) & Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) beat Mark & Debbie Rose (Rayleigh) 3-6 7-6 7-6 to win the Mixed Doubles title for the third year in a row. There was further success for Kent Elms in the Veteran Men's Singles, where Nelson Okomi beat Mark Rose (Rayleigh) 3-6 6-4 then 10-7 in a championship tie-break, and in the Ladies Doubles Plate where Debby Lincoln playing with Halley Needs (Westcliff Hard) beat Rosanna Clarke & Kitty Livingston (David Lloyd) 6-4 6-3. Kent Elms were also represented in the Veteran Men's Doubles, where Mark Hughes & Nelson Okomi lost to Mark Rose & Phil Alderton (Rayleigh) 6-3 6-2, and in the Men's Doubles Plate where Gary Nichools & Matt Freeman lost to John Middleton & Steve Lloyd (Rayleigh) 6-2 6-0. There was also disappointment in the Veterans Mixed Doubles, where Mark & Debbie Rose (Rayleigh) this time got the better of Martin Needs (Kent Elms) & Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) winning 6-1 6-3. Meanwhile, in the Men's Singles, James Holloway (Hadleigh Park) won for the first time, beating Gary Lewis (Hadleigh Park) 6-3 4-6 6-2, while in the Ladies Singles, Rosanna Clarke (David Lloyd) also won for the first time beating last years champion, Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) 6-3 6-0. Sunday 11th September 2011 - CHAIRMAN'S DAY TOURNAMENT

Fifteen players gathered for this years Chairman's Day Tournament which was once again organised by Norman McCouat & Edwina Buchan. Weather conditions were generally favourable with plenty of sun, together with quite a bit of wind. The ladies prizes went to Hanna Stevens in first place, closely followed by Jackie Taylor. Leading the way for the men was Scott Wayman with Bruce Duffield in second place. The Chairman, Gary Nicholls, thanked everyone for attending, especially those who contributed to the substantial buffet.

After many years of Jubilee Cup success with our ladies and mixed teams, our men have started to enjoy a bit of success, reaching the final for second time in three years. Along the way they beat Crowstone, Westcliff Hard and Hadleigh Park before eventually going down to Thorpe Bay in the final.

Sunday 7th August 2011 - FAMILY FUN AT OPEN DAY

It was a packed house at Kent Elms Tennis Club as family and friends of the members, together with other interested parties, took to the courts for our club Open Day. In spite of one brief downpour, the weather was generally kind, and a great time was had by all. Besides the tennis there was also food and drink a plenty, and thanks go to all the members who helped provide a magnificent buffet.

Friday 15th July 2011 - SUMMER LEAGUE HAS UPS AND DOWNS

The Leigh & Westcliff Summer League season saw our ladies second team gain promotion from division 3, after narrowly missing out last year. Our ladies first team also had a good season, and made a strong bid for the division 1 title, before finally losing out to Thorpe Bay. Meanwhile, our men's first team perfomed solidly in division 2, finishing third. However, our second and third men's teams in divisions 2 & 5 found the going tougher, and were both relegated. In the mixed league our first team in division 1 had very variable results, finishing up 4th. In division 2 it was a similar story which this time ended in relegation. However, there was some consolation in divisions 4 & 5 where our teams performed well, finishing in 3rd and 4th respectively.

Saturday 25th June 2011 - SUPERSTARS BANQUET GOES INDIAN

The 14th Annual Superstars Banquet had a change of menu this year, with Indian food being served for the first time. In between the four-course meal and the plentiful drink, members and friends enjoyed the usual mixture of games and quizzes which, with beautiful weather conditions, included two outdoor games played on our new artificial grass courts.

Saturday 30th April 2011 - MORE GUEST STAR PROBLEMS AT KARAOKE NIGHT

Disaster threatened the Chinese Meal, Music Quiz & Karaoke Night when for the ninth year running the mystery guest failed to appear. Some were blaming extra-terrestrial activity after it was claimed that a UFO had been spotted near Tesco'so. Everyone seemed to agree that this was the most likely explanation. With the crowd baying for blood it once again fell to Edwina Buchan to step up to the mike and save the day with her own very special heart rending version of Spirit In The Sky. In no time at all the atmosphere was buzzing with performances which included Phil Stevens (Hotel California), Cynthia Collier & Pete Clark (Da Do Ron Ron), Jo Hancock & Katy Cox (Pretty Woman), Martin & Jo Powell (Don't Go Breaking My Heart), Keith Smith & George Barton (A Little Bitty Tear), Pat & John Rogers (Dancing Queen) and perhaps the highlight of the evening, Phil Stevens & Brenda Lincoln (Baker Street).

Saturday 9th April 2011 - ARTIFICIAL GRASS HAS ARRIVED AT KENT ELMS !

Social tennis began today on the new artificial grass courts which have been laid over the past two weeks. The courts are Tiger Turf Advantage, a 13mm sand dressed surface which utilises the latest high density looped pile. A big thanks must go to our treasurer, Pete Clark, who has spent a massive amount of time researching, negotiating and finally overseeing the installation process.

Wednesday 30th March 2011 - MARTIN POWELL IS NEW CLUB SECRETARY

At the Leigh & Westcliff LTA Winter Tournament Finals, held at Wickford Tennis Club, Kent Elms Martin Needs & Kevin Harvey won the men's doubles for the first time beating James Holloway & Gary Lewis (Hadleigh Park) 3-6 6-2 6-2. In the mixed doubles final Pat Taylor (Kent Elms) & Lisa Gordon (Leigh) threw away a 5-2 lead in the final set losing 7-5 4-6 7-6 to Mark & Debbie Rose (Rayleigh), while in the ladies doubles Ann Murray & Annemeik Binnenijk (Thorpe Bay) beat Lisa Gordon & Claire Elliott (Leigh) 4-6 6-2 6-4 in another very close match.

Sunday 13th March 2011 - MIXED FORTUNES IN WINTER LEAGUE

The Leigh & Westcliff winter league season once again produced a fascinating mixture of highs and lows. In the mixed leagues our top two teams in divisions 1 & 2 did very well, finishing in second and third place respectively. Meanwhile, our three remaining mixed teams in divisions 3, 4 & 5 had a torrid time finishing sixth, fifth and sixth respectively which means that all three teams are likely to be relegated. In the ladies divisions our teams in divisions 1 & 3 both started well but slipped back in the second half of the season, finishing fourth and third respectively. In the men's divisions our first team struggled in division 2, but avoided relegation by finishing in fifth place. Meanwhile, our second team in division 4 had an excellent season and will be promoted from second place over league locked Thorpe Bay. In division 7 our men had a satisfactory season, finishing in third place.

Saturday 12th March 2011 - MARTIN & SUE ARE McLELLAN-PERKINS CHAMPIONS

Martin Needs (Kent Elms) and Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) have added the McLellen-Perkins Floodlight Tournament to their recent run of mixed doubles successes. On a rain affected evening they edged out the current champions Nelson Okomi & Mandy White (Kent Elms) 6-3 2-6 7-6 in an extremely exciting match. Earlier, there was a re run of last years plate final with Steve Lloyd & Dot Monty (Rayleigh) once again getting the better of Kevin Harvey & Jo Hancock (Kent Elms) 7-6 6-4.

Saturday 29th January 2011 - JOHN MOXOM DIES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS

John Moxom has died at age 83 following a long illness. John was born in 1928 at East Ham. He met Mary at the Barclays Training School at Wimbledon Common and they maintained a long distance relationship (Mary lived in West London) before marrying in 1956. John enjoyed a successful career with Barclays Bank which resulted in he and Mary moving to the Southend area in 1962. Mary played tennis at Access for many years before joining Kent Elms Tennis Club in 1992. John began playing tennis at Kent Elms when the new Off Peak section was formed in 1995. He was made an Honorary Member in 2009 in recognition of the great work he has done for the club, both as a member and a non-member, since 1992.

Sunday 23rd January 2011 - NELSON & JACKIE ARE SINGLES CHAMPIONS

After the recent long run of bad weather the 2010 singles finals have at last been played (in 2011!). In the men's singles, Nelson Okomi regained the title he lost last year. Once again he proved his remarkable fitness by surviving a long three set match to beat his young challenger, Kevin Harvey, 6-7 6-2 6-3. Earlier, Jackie Lansley (NeeTaylor) had won the ladies singles in another gruelling three set match in which she stayed cool in the face of relentless rallying from an extremely fit Hanna Stevens, before eventually winning 5-7 6-2 6-0. In the men's plate event, Phil Benton got the better of Tom Hickey, 7-5 6-0.

Monday 17th January 2011 - L & W EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING

The Leigh & Westcliff Tennis Association called an Extraordinary General meeting to vote on two new proposals. The first proposal concerned the closure of Leigh Tennis Club. It was agreed that the large number of Leigh players who are moving to Westcliff Lawn will be allowed to retain the places in the league currently occupied by Leigh teams. The second proposal was from Southend Lawn to alter the mixed league from the current Mens/Ladies/Mixed format to a variable format which could allow some matches to be played with three mixed pairs. It was decided that the format would remain unchanged.

Saturday 15th January 2011 - ARTIFICIAL GRASS COMING TO KENT ELMS

It now looks almost certain that artificial grass courts will be installed at Kent Elms Tennis Club this year. Treasurer, Pete Clark, has confirmed that the club are able to finance the upgrade and a vote amongst members seems to be coming out strongly in favour of the change. It is hoped that the new surface will be in place for the new summer season.
