Ken Clark passed away on Sunday 10th January 2016 at the age of 78, following a relatively short battle against cancer. He was the fourth longest serving member of Kent Elms Tennis Club.
Ken was working for the Evening Echo when, in his spare time, he began playing tennis in a regular four at Priory Park. It was there that he encouraged his brother-in-law Terry Savage to take up tennis. It was not long before Terry decided to join Kent Elms Tennis Club, and was soon followed by Ken who joined the club in 1980 and was immediately plunged into the competitive world of league tennis where he turned out for the first team, playing in division one for nine consecutive seasons.
Ken also served on the tennis club committee for many years and was part of the 1994 management team which organised the move from the old Snakes Lane site to our present home in Aviation Way. He was made a Trustee of the club in 2005.
In later life Ken retained a high degree of fitness, and continued to play tennis to a very high standard. However, about five years ago his wife Pat became ill and Ken had less time for playing tennis.
Ken joined the Off Peak section of the club in 2013. During this period he appeared to be in very good health so it came as a massive shock when his illness was diagnosed. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
The funeral will take place on 28th January at Southend Crematorium 12noon, and there will be a gathering afterwards at The Freight House, Rochford, SS4 1BU. Ken’s son, Andy, has requested No black (or wear some colour) or flowers as per his Dads wishes. Ken would rather a donation be made to Fairhavens Hospice who were absolutely fantastic in Ken’'s final few weeks
As part of the agreed five year maintenance plan for KETC, the committee approved the refurbishment of the Men’s changing room.
