August...and the rain came down, down, down

Saturday proved that KETC courts drain well after a months worth of rain fell on them within a few hours.

Regular inspections were made and the clubhouse, new car park drainage and the courts held up well allowing water to drain off once the rain eased.

All in all we were very fortunate compared to other venues in the area. Click on Picture or here for video.

KETC tennis court wear and rotation plan

Following the annual inspection of the KETC courts  by Technical Surfaces it was confirmed that No.1 court is wearing more than the others.

In order to even out the wear we propose the following: All knock out matches and upcoming L&W Winter league matches should be played on courts 2 & 3. Please do your best to support the above proposals as it will extend the life of our courts and the clubs finances

Holidays and injuries meant that several walkovers were awarded. So with the ¼ final matches now complete the semi-finals of the main and plate event beckon.

Finals day is Saturday 7th September from 1830 hrs at the club. We hope to see you there supporting the players and club.

Mad Dogs and Englishmen KETC Floodlights

Despite an unforeseen change in the sunny weather (it rained all day!), new floodlights

were installed as well as bird spikes ready for the 2013/14 Winter season to ensure there are no blackouts or unfortunate incidents during play.

Thanks to Peter, Pat, Danny, Terry and Martin for giving up their day and to Brenda for making the tea.

The car park was  resurfaced July/August 2013 and we must congratulate Peter, Pat and Danny on  fantastic job to ensure this came to fruition.

We have already received several comments from both players and coaching parents as to the difference it makes. This is just one of the many projects that have been planned and financed as part of our maintenance and improvement plan to cover the next 5 years.

If you do have any questions please contact Peter Clark or Danny Lovett in the first instance

KETC first summer tennis camp a success

Regular junior coaching members attended their first summer camp at Kent Elms Tennis Club. The camp was held over four mornings and was a mixture of games, fitness technical, tactical and tournament based activity.

With Gemma and Martin at the helm the participants enjoyed their time and when the week finished went home with a goody bag and plenty of tennis tips for their future game.

It was also pleasing to note how well behaved and respectful the children were of the club and its members.

The sun came out for a rare appearance at the KETC  fun day tournament of American mixed doubles and Wii Tennis on Sunday.

Members and family congregated to watch 22 entrants battle it out in the mid-day sun for the opportunity to win the grand prize

Thanks to the handicap system put in place the rounds ended fairly evenly with the top 4 scoring ladies and Men going through to a Semi-final. These were closely contested with Mandy White, Pat Rogers, George Barton and Andy Pond  losing out to the eventual  finalists Pat Townsley/Scott Wayman and Marilyn Sharples/Mark Hughes

The Final reverted to a normal set and once again was a closely fought [Some would say highly competitive] affair with Pat and Scott just coming out on top

All in all it was a great opportunity to get together play some tennis, get a British sunburn, eat good food, drink the bar dry and share good company

Thank you for all your help and good wishes

On a dry and sunny day [Thats a turn up for the books!] Kent Elms work party set out to fulfill its maintainence programme. After having the courts swept earlier in the month, volunteers trimmed the conifers and tidied the planting banks, painted the fence posts, cleared the front apron and car park, stained the benches and sheds together with giving the kitchen and club a thorough spring clean.

Our thanks go to Dawn and her husband Keith, Mary, Moria, Jacquie, Gill, Brenda, Danny, Nigel, Scott, Andy Wayman, John Cully, Mark Dane, Pat Taylor,  Pat Townsley, Terry, Peter Clark and Martin.

The committee  appreciates that many of our members join for a variety of reasons and that members have busy work, family and social ties. However, without volunteers the club would come to a standstill so if you can give some time to the club on any day, no matter how small, it would be gratefully appreciated - After all it is our club and ‘many hands make light work’.

Hope to see you at the next one and thank you in anticipation of your help.

There was a near riot at this year’s Chinese Meal, Music Quiz & Karaoke Night, when, for the 11th year in a row, the mystery guest star failed to turn up. In spite of the organiser’s very sincere apologies the situation remained extremely tense as the baying mob threatened to run amok.

In all the noise and confusion, one guest almost choked on their Chicken Chow Mein, while another claimed to have been cursed by a fortune cookie. Thankfully, the situation was rapidly brought under control by Edwina Buchan who surprised everyone by leaping to her feet and performing her own indescribable version of These Boots Are Made For Walking. Within seconds, the crowd began to settle down, although at one stage Edwina did threaten to walk all over several of the troublemakers.

Suddenly, the mood changed as the clubhouse began to rock to some incredible sounds which include John Culley (Kissing A Fool), Simon Harris (Sit Down), Jill Roberts & Jacquie Wright (Waterloo), Martin Powell (Rhinestone Cowboy/Its Not Unusual), Andy Stone (Quando, Quando, Quando), Martin Needs with Andy & Simon (House Of Fun), Keith Smith (I Wanna Wake Up With You), Pat Taylor & Jackie Harris (Shang A Lang), Sarah Stone with Sue & Jackie (Top Of The World), and my own personal favourite, Bren Lincoln (Don’t Leave Me This Way). However, the highlight of the evening saw Sue Needs blast out the lead vocals on Relight My Fire, backed by the Table 3 choir.

With good conditions  barring a slight breeze at the start of the evening, the ladies group 'A' Leigh & Westcliff  LTA  winter cup final was held at Thorpe Bay LTC  on Monday 15th April 2013.  The  Kent Elms team consisted of Mandy White, Steph Haddrell, Emma Mellish and Jo Hancock. The opposition was Sally Margisson, Heather Bell, Heather Clark and Fiona Coull.

Mandy and Steph played 1st pair against Sally and Heather Bell and won the 1st set quite easily 6-2 but then had a tougher struggle in the 2nd set but managed to clinch it 7-5. The 2nd pair, of Jo and Emma played Heather Clark and Fiona and after a close first set eventually won 6-4. Unfortunately the 2nd set went all too quickly to the opposition 6-0 making it one set all, but by then KETC ladies knew they had clinched the overall tie by 3 sets to 1 to win the trophy

At the 2013 AGM and Kent Elms 65th Year Martin Powell was voted in as Chairman with Danny Lovett as Club Secretary. Also re-elected onto the committee were; Peter Clark, Jo Hancock, Pat Taylor, Katy Cox and Terry Savage together with Martin Needs [Selection]

A word or two must be said about out outgoing Chairman Gary Nicholls who has led the club over the past three years despite some reservations on his part when he took on the role .

Gary has worked tirelessly for the club in that time going about his role in a quiet, professional and diligent manner to ensure the club progressed both on and off the court.

Gary is now looking forward to concentrating on  his tennis and running his business Swiftclean (UK) - We wish him well with both.

On a windy and sometimes rainy night, the 2013 McLellan-Perkins Trophy finals took place at Kent Elms Tennis Club on Saturday 16th March 2013. The event was well attended by KETC members, family and other L&W LTA clubs who took full advantage of the drinks and refreshments available whilst enjoying the tennis.  Photos Here

In the Plate final, umpired by Martin Powell,  Debby Lincoln/Craig Butler [Kent Elms] took on Jo Day/Kevin Barrs [Southend Lawn]. This was Debby and Craig's second final appearance in successive years and they were determined not to finish runners up this time. They exploded of the blocks and went into a 4-0 lead in the first set. Jo and Kevin dug deep but were unable to prevent a 6-2 loss. The second set was a different story with some terrific rally's and winning shots as Jo and Kevin settled into the match ensuring that the second set went to a tie break. Debby and Craig held their nerve to overcome a 4-1 deficit to take the set and trophy 6-2 7-6.

In the Main event, umpired by Gary Nicholls, regular winning finalists Martin Needs [Kent Elms]/Sue Sergeant [Thorpe Bay] took on new opponents Lucia Bigden/Chris Ashton [Hadleigh Park]. The match got off to a tentative start as the rains came down which dictated the speed of the match. Thankfully the rain didn’t last long and normal pace was resumed with the reigning holders maintaining their composure despite some fantastic tennis from their opponents to take the first set 6-1. As with the plate final, the second set was a lot closer with points and games being shared until the seventh game, where a crucial break of serve allowed Martin and Sue to go on and win the Trophy for successive years 6-1 6-3.

Congratulations go to all those who participated throughout the tournament with a special thanks to Pat Townsley and Jo Hancock for organising together with ensuring the tournament and finals ran smoothly despite some atrocious weather conditions this winter. Finally a special mention to Brenda Lincoln and all the members who helped provide a magnificent buffet and ensuring drinks and refreshment were on hand throughout the finals.
