2012 News

Finals Year

The soon to be infamous, and well travelled [if it gets back safe ] KETC Ball arrives at a Portland Trail Blazers Basketball game with club stoolwart  [sic] Phil Stevens. Earlier in the year it arrived at Base Camp Everest and was carried to over 5500 metres by club chairman Gary Nicholls. Where to next I wonder?

Saturday 22nd December 2012 – KETC CHRISTMAS GATHERING

With all the decorations , festive music and party hats in place the 2012 Christmas gathering  got underway. Once again it was well attended and along with good company served up a veritable smorgasbord of Christmas offerings. A well prepared and seasonal quiz was provided by Keith along with the  opportunity to  anonymously wail during the infamous Christmas carol karaoke session . Once again our genial bar hostess, Brenda ably assisted by Debbie kept the glasses full until the last of the stragglers left in the early hours of the morning.

Thursday 6th December 2012 – OFF PEAKERS CHRISTMAS DINNER

The Off Peak Members had their inaugural Christmas Dinner on 6th December at South Essex College's restaurant, WAVES . With the exception of one member, due to illness, the event was attended by all with their spouses or partners. An enjoyable time was had by all that attended at what, hopefully becomes an annual event.

Thanks go to Ro Goolamali for organizing .

Thursday 29th November 2012 – EVEREST BASE CAMP IN MY SIGHTS

Gary Nicholls KETC chairman is in the middle of a three week trip to Everest Base camp to raise money for the charity ‘Mind’. Here is his latest report  - I have been suffering with altitude sickness but the Diamox is sorting it. I am currently in Namchi Bazzar and head to Tangbouche in the morning. This is a bloody challenging trip far harder than I expected but what fabulous scenery. My best regards to all at the club, I still have the KETC ball in my rucksack, the PMA and small steps is paying off, all the best Gary

Saturday 24th November 2012 – FISH ‘N’ CHIP QUIZ NIGHT

After a change of date the quiz night was off and running with a good attendance despite the weather. With Peter and Cynthia at the helm the festivities got off to a fast start as the first of several quiz rounds took place. A vociferous (some would say rowdy) crowd remained that way until the food arrived. Suffice to say it did its job again and with it served ‘as is’ it helped the men escape the washing up! Despite several challenges the quiz was an extremely close run race with table 2 eventual winners. A great night was had by all with those attending thankful to Peter and Cynthia and looking forward to the next one .

On a rainy and windswept night  members of the Leigh & Westcliff lawn Tennis Association clubs made their way to Saxon Hall in Southend for the annual presentation evening. Held in the new annexe this year the event was well attended.  Kent Elms figured in several awards at League, Club and Individual level and it was good to see the table fill up with the requisite trophies. However, despite a good haul our congratulations must go out to the other clubs who also had a good year. Overall it was a vociferous night with plenty of good natured  banter amongst rivals. Our thanks go out to the L&W LTA volunteer Committee for once again hosting  a well organised and balanced night of achievement recognition and frivolity.

Sunday 16th September 2012 – L&W LTA 2012 SUMMER FINALS

Once again Kent Elms tennis club were represented in several finals both in the ladies and mixed sections. First off was Pat Taylor who partnered Lisa Gordon (David Lloyd) in the mixed doubles playing  against clubmate Martin Needs and Sue Sergeant of Thorpe Bay. For the fourth consecutive year Sue and Martin ran out winners  7-5 6-1. However, Sue and Martin were not able to take their second trophy of the day in the veterans mixed doubles final losing to Cathy Chambers and Steve Lloyd of Rayleigh 6-4 6-1.

Finally, in the Ladies doubles plate, Kent Elms were represented by Kylie Barret and Katy Cox who were seeking their first finals win. Their opponents  Jackie Henesy and Sally Jackson from David Lloyd were a strong pairing and unfortunately Katy and Kylie were just beaten in what was, a very close final, with the final set decided by a championship tie-break. The final score  6-4 3-6 10-7.

It was that time of year again when a group consisting of Pat & Di Taylor, Pat & John Rogers, Danny & Linda Lovett, Bren & Debby Lincoln, Pete Clark and Phil Stevens decided to make the long trek to Devon for the Kent Elms annual sporting break . . . and for once the weather was really good! This year, tennis was completely forgotten as the party indulged themselves in Golf, Bowls, Archery, Shooting, Swimming, Snooker, Ten Pin Bowling and a variety of Crafts. While Pat Rogers remained our star golfer, this year her husband John was determined not to be outdone by putting in a sparkling display on day one. Meanwhile, the big hitting golf dual between Danny and Phil (despite his injured right hand) was believed to have ended in a draw!  Elsewhere, there were excellent performances by Danny on pistols, Debby on rifles, Bren at archery, Pete & Phil at bowls, with everybody rubbish at ten pin bowling! Also a quiz team consisting of Phil Stevens, Debby Lincoln, Pat Taylor & Pete Clark won a bottle of bubbly at the Tuesday quiz night. Finally, a special mention for Linda Lovett who was here there and everywhere taking part in a whole range of unusual activities which included Zumba, Thai Chi and Deep Relaxation. Thanks to everyone who made the trip and also to our guests Ray & Lyndsey Grimwood, who joined us on Thursday. Debbie & Phil Xbox hurdle - Video

Saturday 15th September 2012 - KETC SINGLES FINALS

LADIES FINAL- Steff Haddrell vs Hanna Stevens
Watched by a generous and appreciative crowd the club finals night at Kent Elms Tennis Club got off to a flying start before the main event with two hotly contested finals. In the ladies final Steff Haddrell faced Hanna Stevens to decide who could call themselves Ladies champion 2012. In a flurry of baseline action Hanna sent a clear message to Steff to win the first game on serve. Steff came back to win the next game and the match continued that way until Steff found her groove, broke serve and started to control the set to win it 6-3. With Molly, Hanna’s dog, offering coaching tips and a wag of the tail from the side Hanna started the second set like the first but despite the closeness of the games Steff was just too powerful on the day and ran out the eventual winner 6-3 6-1.

MENS PLATE FINAL – James Needs vs Gary Nicholls
On court 3 young James Needs [12] was taking part in a David and Goliath type match. He faced Gary Nicholls [Chairman & first Team Player] who was hotly tipped to overcome James with his experience and tactical strength. Watched by his family James got off to a good start with Gary matching him shot for shot. Gary’s experience paid off he and he moved within two first set points but James held his nerve and with some devastating inch perfect passing winners pulled the game back to make it 5-5. With his spirits buoyed and cheered on by his family James finished with style to take the set 7-5. Gary was now on the back foot and having played two Leigh & Westcliff Semi-finals that day was starting to look tired. However James needed to be on his guard as Gary pulled out all the stops and called on his reserves of energy to make the start of the second set a close call at two games all. James dug deep and once again pulled off some terrific shots to finish the set and take the match 7-5 6-2.

MENS FINAL – Kevin Harvey vs Scott Wayman
In the main event Kevin Harvey, previous finalist and runner-up, took on the surprise package of the tournament Scott Wayman. Scott had made his way through to the final with some excellent tennis beating club stalwarts and first team players Bryan Bone and Phil Stevens in his first tournament. With the official niceties out of the way the match got off to a titanic start with baseline rallies, deft drop shops and superb serving. The two finalists slugging it out like a boxing match matching each other, punch for punch, shot for shot. However despite the closeness of the games Kevin was able to call on his experience and finish off the vital points to move three love up. Scott then battled his way back to make it 4-2 with some champagne tennis from both players. This was building into a classic final. Each player held their serve to make it 5- 3 in Kevin’s favour. Scott once again dug deep and moved within a point of winning the next game but Kevin held on to take the game to deuce and win the set 6-3. The second set started off like the first and with the crowd safely tucked up in the warm provided a spectacle which kept them enthralled. Once again Scott pushed Kevin to his limit to bring out his best tennis. Back and forth they duelled hitting powerful back and forehand baseline shots together with some remarkable recovery shots from either side. As Scott pushed harder Kevin reacted with some of the best tennis we’ve seen at the club to stay in contention. With the first three games of the second set going to advantage point Scott was unlucky not o break Kevin’s serve and move ahead but in the end it was Kevin who held his nerve and found the winning shot to go 4-0 up. Scott managed to take the next game to make it 4-1 and almost broke serve in the next game but Kevin once again held on to take the advantage point and game. In the final game Kevin produced a couple of aces before Scott brought the game back to 30-all. However, Kevin’s serve and finishing proved too strong for Scott and he took the match and championship 6-3 6-1.

Friday 13th July 2012 –WE’RE GOING UP - Well done to #KETC Men's 2 & 3 on  gaining promotion

So far - so good. With week 10 nearly complete - Men’s 1, Mixed 1and Ladies 1 secure their place for next season thanks to last week’s results and other week 10 results going their way. Elsewhere despite a hard fought campaign, Men’s 2 lose out to Thorpe bay as division 4 champions but as a consolation are promoted due to Thorpe bay being league locked. Congratulations to Craig and his team. Mixed 4 beat Hockley 3 in battle for second place and are confirmed runners-up in Mixed division 5. Mixed 2 & 3 also secure their places for next season. Ladies 2 and Men’s 4 finished bottom of their divisions resulting in Ladies 2 being relegated to Division 3 next summer. Finally, in the battle for first place in division 5 a draw against second place Crowstone 1 was sufficient to see KETC Men’s 3 top the division... It was truly nail biting stuff!

Monday 9th July 2012 – DOWN TO THE WIRE

It’s week 10 in the Leigh & Westcliff summer league and with the results from week 9 now in, it confirms that it’s nail biting stuff for two of our men's teams as they go to their next matches knowing only a 6-0 win in the case of Men's 2, or a draw or better for Men's 3 will guarantee them the top place in their respective divisions. With Men's 3 playing the club challenging them for top spot, it’s going to be a close call. Week 9 results also confirm that our top Ladies and Mixed teams need a win, with Men’s 1 only needing a point in their last match to ensure they  stave off relegation. Sadly, Men's 4 and Ladies 2, will finish bottom of their leagues with the Ladies also being relegated to Division 3 next year.  Elsewhere  the remaining teams are still able to finish mid to runner-up positions in their divisions.

Saturday 30th June 2012 – SUPERSTARS NIGHT OUT

A distinct lack of superstars but plenty of fun was still had at the club with Pat, Di and Brenda being the perfect hosts for the night. Plenty of brain taxing quiz questions were softened by a bountiful supply of Chinese food and an open drinks cabinet.

As the weather held the teams moved outside where the Rollerball event was hotly contested and summed up the evenings  fun theme as well as some surprise successes and failures . Eventually table one ran out winners thanks to a combination of luck and reading the fortune cookies early!

Add into the mix the Andy Murray 3rd round match win watched by all on our new TV and it was a perfect night  - Unless  of course you’re a closet Marcos Baghdatis fan?

Sunday 10th June 2012 – Summer 2012 season reaches Halfway Mark

A mixed bag for Kent Elms Tennis club as we reach the halfway stage of the 2012 summer season. Following a difficult start due to injuries and availability all teams managed to get off to a reasonable start. Some divisions have seen a noticeable upturn in players abilities and this is reflected in the league standings to date. Despite this Kent Elms remains in a good position to gain/chase promotion in at least four of its divisions with our top teams not too far behind the leaders.

Saturday 28th April 2012 – GUEST STAR JINX STRIKES AGAIN

In spite of several consultations with astrologers, and a ritual exorcism, the Indian Meal, Music Quiz & Karaoke Night once again appeared to be jinxed when, for the 10th year running, the mystery guest failed to appear. Many were blaming the switch from Chinese to Indian food, and one guest noted that the evening seemed to be one onion bhaji short of a picnic.

Fortunately, just as a disgruntled guest threatened to crack a poppadom over the organisers head, a potentially volatile situation was averted when Edwina Buchan rather unexpectedly leapt to her feet and launched into her own memorable version of Copacabana.

Before you could say “Peshwari Nan” any lingering disappointment was forgotten and the whole place was rocking to the sounds of Andy Stone (Quando Quando Quando); Phil Stevens (Bridge Over Troubled Water); Mary Smith & Pat Taylor (Shang A Lang); Pat Rogers, Gill Roberts, Bren Lincoln & Marilyn Sharples (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow); Mary Smith, Chris Gore, Barbara Chandler & Carol Thomas (Lipstick On Your Collar); Debby Lincoln, Sarah Stone, Hanna Stevens & Sue Needs (Dancing Queen); Gill Roberts & Pat Taylor (Summer Loving); and perhaps the highlight of the evening, Martin Powell & Andy Stone (It’s Not Unusual). Andy & Martin rock the house? - Video

We're not sure what Simon Cowell would say but who cares! - With a million pound drop style quiz, plenty of food and Karaoke, the night was a rip roaring success. Despite the rain, spirits couldn't be dampened and a great night was enjoyed by all. With the youngsters proving that even if their singing (?) wasn't up to scratch, their grey matter was. Our thanks to the organisers whom without the night couldn't have happened. See you at the next one. [More to follow]

Friday 27th January 2012 - ANOTHER MESSAGE FROM MOIRA IN OZ

Dear all, it's been like travelling back in time driving on forest and mountain roads where we have only the birds for company and you can park anywhere in town! We have huffed and puffed our way up some cliffs and smallish mountains and have been rewarded with awesome views and Margaret is still talking to me. We strolled round Hobart today and the buzzy Salamanca Market followed by high tea in Old Hadleys Hotel. Tomorrow we will take a cruise around the harbour and then have our final fish feast in Oz! Missing tennis! Love Moira X X.
